Simple Minds Hull City Hall

Simple Minds Hull City Hall

I had the pleasure of photographing Simple Minds for their facebook page. Having photographed numerous times before I knew the lighting would be immense from the back of the stage and this occasion was no different. Thankfully the new Pentax K-5 mkii and the DA* 16-50mm lens where well up for the task in hand.

The Kooks, Hull City Hall, Hull 4th Oct 2011

After a very busy festival season, gig season has finally started. First show the Kooks at Hull City Hall reminded me of the difficulties of shooting indoors;

  • Low lighting
  • Narrow pits
  • High stages
  • Strobe lighting

Support bands for the night where Lonsdale Boys Club & Tribes, unfortunately the lighting guy decided to flood the stage with green from the back of the stage & red lighting to the front making photography near impossible & fruitless, also the front of stage had a walk way added, meaning only head shots of the lead singer where possible from the narrow pit, this did not make me confident for the main act.

Thank fully Luke Pritchard is a very experienced front man, coming out armed with guitar,

the lighting was drastically changed to low background lighting & lovely white lighting from the front with just a hint of red. For the second song Luke removed his guitar & became the classic front man, using the added walkway to entice the crowd into singing long with him.

By the end of the third song Luke was reaching out to his fans & I nailed this final shot with the Pentax k-5 with the Pentax DA* 50-135mm lens

Bloc Party Hull City Hall 8th Oct 2009

Great show by Bloc Party in Hull last night. Was only photographer with a photo pass which was a rare occasion. Good crowd present comprising mainly under 20s which was also good to see. Photography wise was stood right under stage which made face on shots difficult as the stage had very large speakers in front of Kele which had little room to squeeze past. Bloc Party’s light show was excellent, with lots of front lighting.
