T in the Park, Kinross, Scotland, 6th – 8th July 2012

T in the Park is one of those festivals I have wanted to do for such a long time now, I never thought it might happen.

I always get told how great my job must be and yes sometimes it is, sometimes though you do a festival and wonder why am I doing this? This years TITP was exactly one of those times.

Having travelled in my camper van for over seven hours to reach the site and travelling over 300 miles to get there I was  guided into the staff car park. In order to cover a festival  the kit required is rather a  large amount. My kit comprises ;

Two bodies

Four lenses

Twelve spare batteries, baup up backup and some more!

Three flash guns again backup backup backup and some more!

Two grips

Eight memory cards

Laptop

Three dongles for 3G

Now this lot is heavy and I carry it all n two bags, due to the weather and mud a roller trolley isn’t really an option.

So when you discover the box office is site opposite side to the site you are parked it doesn’t make you happy. Having got to the box office I discovered the press entrance was the same as everyone else’s which was half the walk back the  way I came, by the time I got to the press office I was exhausted it had to be said. Now for some reason at festivals the organisers always seem to think us photographers have more money than the punters so offer us a chip butty for the mouth watering price of £5 this got you a very small seeded bun the kind you get 8 for a pound in the supermarket and a handful of fries, well a small child’s handful of fries. Why didn’t I go into the arena? Unfortunately us press types can’t be trusted to enter the arena and can only go at 2.30 on a guided tour by one of the pa’s, seems the organisers are worried we make take photos of their mud inflicted clientelle… Well yes we would because that’s the kind of image that sells and does sell, that’s how we earn our wages. So ranting over and onto the photos.Kasabian headline Sunday, T in the Park 2012

The line up for T in the Park 2012 was actually good and I finally got to kick some bands of my bucket list. Simple Minds at a festival, Noel Gallagher, Happy Mondays and of course the Stone Roses at there first UK festival headline slot of this reunion.

Park Life Weekender, Platt Park, Manchester 9th June 2012

I late call on Friday had me packing my wellies for Saturdays day 1 of Park Life Weekender in Platt Park, Manchester. This was a new festival for me, but one I had to do to kick my Flaming Lips, Wayne Coyne in a ball image bucket that every concert photographer seems to have in their portfolio.

The trip to Manchester in teh car involved a sunny drive until I passed Sheffield where the sky turned very black, yup the daily rain this summer once again reared its ugly head. Turning Platt Fields into mud fest similar to Glastonburys gone by.

First shoot of the day was Alt-J who have been at the last two festivals I have covered but missed both times and I secretly enjoyed their set.

Next was the Phenomenal Handclap Band who it has to be said didn’t clap all that much and certainly were not phenomenal, in fact they gave the impression it was all just a bit to much effort being there.

Next up was a little treat, Chic with special guest Jonny Marr. Niles Rogers from Chic has been involved in some of the best dance tracks ever written & his band treated us to Madonna’s Like A Virgin, David Bowie’s Let Dance along with their own funky groove laden hits.

Afterwards I bumped into Niles Rogers & Jonny Marr for a quick portrait session.

Next up was Kelis who according to reports had an outburst on twitter about her set being cut short, to be honest her set was plagued with sound problems throughout and was probably just as well it was cut short.

From Kelis to the ever professional Noah & The Whale, whose set was just a tad predictable, with one of the fellow photographers telling us exactly when Charlie Fink would use the front high risers.

So finally onto The Flaming Lips, well what can you say, crowd surfing balls, 300 tons of confetti, huge balloons, just a razzmatazz of things going on, superb.

Dot to Dot Festival, Nottingham 3rd June 2012

Dot to Dot, such fond memories, my first ever festival assignment was Dot to Dot way back when, so yes I have fond memories of it. This years Dot to Dot had a slight venue change no more Trent Uni with it’s upstairs downstairs stages choosing instead comedy club Jongleurs as a venue, which looked similar to where they played championship darts finals. Very nice ;-)

On getting my pass from the wristband exchange in a very, very wet Talbot Street I made my way to Rock City to catch Bastille, having photographed them last month at Live at Leeds I pretty much knew what to expect, lighting was slightly better though.

Having the usual first three songs I headed for the Basement of Rock City where The Night were setting up with a harpist my interest was increased, mixed with a keen guitarist who really thinks he’s in a rock band and a female lead singer they concocted some poppy tunes, trying to find anything else about them though proved difficult on Google’s search bringing up lots ot bands called variations of The Night…

Back upstairs then for Bombay Bicycle Clubs ex backing singer Lucy Rose who looked genuinely surprised at the very full Rock City for her laid back thirty minute set.

Patterns have had a lot of word count given to them recently, however trying to find Red Room in Rescue Rooms proved rather difficult, going up some stairs like some secret gentleman’s club, the room already reasonably full.

Patterns Performs at Dot to Dot Festival, Nottingham, England 03-06-2012

Back to Rock City for young Bob Dylanesque sounding Jake Bugg, looking like a very young Miles Kane in dapper suit he made an entertaining 45 minute set fly by, with fans jigging away.

Staying in Rock City for another folky sounding solo artist Willy Mason, who would have been ok, but I had enough of solo acoustic guitar playing for one afternoon.

A walk in the rain followed across town to Jongleurs Comedy club where the highlight of the day proved to be Pure Love, who I hear you ask??? Remember that band The Gallows??? Well it’s Frank Carter’s new project. I must say I was surprised with just how melodic they where and how his voice has changed from the screaming yelling Gallows to a very good rock outfit. Prefering to perform from within the crowd leaving his band mates on the stage created a great backdrop to get some different kind of rock photos.

Staying in Jongleurs a refreshing Lime cordial & soda water followed by American noise pop/surf punk band Wavves, with a bass player sporting lots of hair, that scruffy surfer dude look, they made for an entertaining set.

Walking back through the rain again, will this weather ever stop??? For the trek back to Rock City to catch headliners The Drums. I havent photographed The Drums since Leeds Festival a couple of years ago & have since had a member come & go…

I so wanted to stay for Friends & The Internet, but being soggy, cold and damp I chose the easy option and went home…

Dot to Dot see you next year..

Bingley Music Live 2011, Myrtle Park, 3-4th September

After Dolly Parton I drove the 90 minutes to Bingley for one of my favourite festivals, Bingley Music Live. This is the fourth time I have covered BML & the lineup never disapoints with a mixture of unsigned, newly signed, modern & retro acts, everyone is well catered for. Saturday’s highlight was the fantastic Dione Bromfield, her voice really is superb live & from such a small package, its hard to believe that she is still only 15 years old. After her set I managed to get a few moments to capture some portraits, which I am well pleased with.

Leeds Festival 2011

After a good few weeks off work due to personal reasons it was good to go to the muddy & dirty Leeds Festival. With a chance to shoot headliners Muse, Strokes, Pulp & My Chemical Romance this was a good chance to kick some bands of my bucket list. Also got to do some great portrait shoots with Seasick Steve & John Paul Jones, The Joy Formidable, The King Blues, The Blackout & Miles Kane.

I think my most memorable moment of the whole weekend was starting to dither waiting for Pulp’s third song to start, my word was it cold in front of that Main Stage.
